| Welcome to the City of Nanaimo's Habitat Atlas. Inside you will find a wealth of information on the City's natural heritage and its surrounding environment. We hope this Atlas will provide you with a sense of the beauty and diversity of the environment that can be found in the City of Nanaimo.
Note: The environmentally sensitive areas have recently undergone revision. The map does not show this revised information yet. We are working to update the map, but in the meantime you can download a PDF version of the new areas.
The Atlas is divided into four broad themes:
1. LAND:
Offers information on the City's environmentally sensitive areas, its general soil types and some examples of the many species that thrive in these habitats.
2. WATER:
Provides information on the City's aquatic habitat and the Watercourse Bylaw that is used to protect the habitat values within it.
3. AIR:
Has information on air quality monitoring done by the Ministry of Water, Air and Land Protection and on the City's efforts to deal with the issue of Climate Change.
4. COMMUNITY:
Is the place reserved for you to share your knowledge and to connect with the local environmental community.
In this section, you will find a listing of the City's Environmental Non-government Organizations (ENGOs) under "Community Contacts".
If you would like to post any sightings of local wildlife or if you have completed an inventory or survey that you would like to share with the community, use our "Sightings and Observations" feature.
This is a new service and we
appreciate your comments and input at any time. If you feel anything within the
Atlas needs correction or clarification, please use the "Feedback" tab found
above and let us know how we can improve this site for you.
Thank you and enjoy.
